![]() They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. (John 17:16) A Christian is essentially as different from someone in the world as a dove is from a raven, or a lamb from a lion. We are not of the world even in our nature because, in Christ we take on a new nature. Nothing could make us go back into the world, after having tasted the goodness of the Lord. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:35-39) We might be tried on every side; we might fall into some temporary sin; but we could not go back. We might backslide; but we could not become a sinner as we used to be. We are not of the world by our nature. We are twice-born; in our veins runs the blood of the royal family of the universe. We are royalty; we are heaven-born children. Our freedom is not merely a bought one, but we have liberty with a new-born nature; we are essentially and entirely different from the world. If we are God's people, then we are not of the world in our new nature; for we are "not of the world, even as Christ was not of the world."
