“Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” (John 17:7)
Now that we are in Christ Jesus we have been set apart. We have been sanctified by the Word of God. Our union with Christ has put a chasm between us and the world. We are in the world but we are no longer comfortable in it. As the old gospel hymn notes, “This world is not my home, I’m just passing through.” We can either shake our heads in distress at people who commit the acts that we also blindly participated in, or we can pray, pray, pray for them. Sanctification equips us to do exactly what God has called us to do, be a light not hidden under a bushel (Matt 5:15), and salt of the earth (Matthew 5:13). We can no longer do what we want to do. We belong to Christ Jesus, dead to sin, and sanctified for His use. “Death to sin means that the old man has been crucified and the body of sin destroyed—we no longer serve sin (Romans 6:6); we are justified from sin (6:7); we are alive to God and live to him (6:10–11); sin no longer reigns in our mortal body and does not lord it over us (6:12, 14); we present ourselves to God and our members as instruments of righteousness to God, so that we are servants of righteousness unto holiness (6:13, 19); we are under the reign of grace (6:14); we render obedience from the heart to the pattern of Christian teaching (6:17); the fruit is unto holiness, and the end everlasting life (6:22).” (John Murray) Sanctification means sin no longer has power over us. Thus, we have the power to overcome whatever it is that feels overwhelming in this moment. GiGi❤️
