“And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid.” (Matthew 17:7)
For many the power of touch is neglected in our busy society. When we are busy going to and fro, fulfilling our various roles, we may be too busy to see and hear those we care about the most, and forget to touch or hug. Research indicates that when humans touch each other in social settings tension is eased. When it comes to our mental health, the hormone Oxytocin is released in the brain and provides that elevated feel-good sensation that makes us happy. This improves our physical health by “reducing blood pressure, our pulse goes down and we are calming our body, which puts less stress on our heart.” Jesus understood the power of touch and demonstrated its power through the miracle of healing, showing compassion and building personal and relational bonds, particularly with those considered outcasts. He understood that the power of touch enforced human connection and fostered emotional and spiritual well-being. There’s healing, connection, and bonding in the power of touch.
