Evey Poumpouras, in her book, Becoming Bulletproof, writes that “Fear is relative to the situation you are facing. Your ability to conquer your fear, survive, and even thrive comes down to one thing and one thing only: mental attitude. Being able to navigate your mental and physical response to fear is your number one survival skill.” David provided us with an example of what having the right mental attitude looked like as he was pursued by his enemies. “Deliver me from my enemies, O God; protect me from those who rise up against me.” (Psalm 59:1) David demonstrated a positive mental attitude when his men abandoned him and spoke of stoning him. Instead of playing the victim, instead of taking it personal, and instead of being impulsive, David submitted himself to God first, before fear could set in, and before he could be subjected to negative thinking. He bowed before God and inquired, “Shall I pursue after this troop? Shall I overtake them?” And He answered him, “Pursue, for thou shalt surely overtake them and without fail recover all.” (1 Samuel 30:8) David also taught us where to place our hope and praise, ”The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence. (2 Samuel 22:2-3) A positive mental attitude is acquired by submitting ourselves to God, first, so that we can resist the enemy, addressing those negative automatic thoughts. We will then find ourselves right where we need to be, at the throne of Grace, trusting God to get us through whatever it is we face. GiGi❤️
