So he said, "I was..." - I Kings 19: 10 What are you doing here, Elijah? Are you ready for this? Elijah's answer to the great I AM is "I was..." "I am in this cave because I no longer am what I was. I was a mighty man of God. Now, I am a shadow of my former self. I was a prophet who dared to speak for God. Now, I am a pitiful person who dares not even speak up for himself. I was a model of integrity. Now, I am the poster child for timidity. I am where I am because I no longer am what I was nor do what I used to do." Could it be that we too no longer have the power, the fellowship or the effectiveness that we should have because we no longer are what we were nor do what we used to do? Remember, we used to study the Bible regularly. We used to go to church every Sunday. We used to pay our tithes and give our offerings. We used to serve in a ministry. We used to lead a small group. We use to fast and pray. We used to sing in the choir. We used to have godly friends. Yet, somehow, something or somebody got us off tract and here we are a long ways from Mt. Carmel in a cave! For most people, going back to what they used to be is not a good idea. Especially when they have a sinful past. However, what we have here is a case of a righteous man who ran away from righteousness. That's not something you leave. It is something to build on and lean on! Please excuse the bad grammar, but maybe it's time to go back to "what you was." Pastor Benjamin Morris
