I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust." - Psalm 91: 2 The open city is a relatively new phenomenon. Today, when you enter a major city, you do so without detection or restriction. You cross the city limits without having to check in or check out. You arrive without having to pay a toll or a troll. However, it has not always been so. Way back in the day, great cities like the mythic city of Troy, the frontier city of Jericho and the holy city of Jerusalem were surrounded on every side by walls. Though they were often massive and marvelous, these walls were by no means for mere decoration. They were there for protection. There were windows in these walls. There were watchmen on these walls. There were gates in these walls. Thus, in order to enter these cities or to take these cities, an entrant or an enemy had to first deal with its walls. Consider yourself a city and consider God as a wall which surrounds you and protects you at all times. God is your refuge. You can run and hide in Him. God is your fortress, you are shielded from the brunt of attacks by Him. As your refuge and fortress, God surrounds you on every side. He has assigned goodness and mercy to follow you and cover your backside. He has sent His Holy Spirit to guard you on your blind sides. He has posted angels to encamp around you on all sides. Praise the Lord that as you slumber and sleep, as you go about your daily tasks, you are surrounded by a fortress which can be trusted more than your security system from ADT, more than your German shepherd growling in your front yard, more than the pistol you may keep under your pillow. Therefore, you shall not fear the terror by night because all day, all night the angels of the Lord walk God's walls of protection around you. Thank God when you sleep, they don't.
