“You are the God who sees me,” (Genesis 16:13)
In our greatest despair we might imagine that we are invisible to God. We might imagine that what we endure doesn’t mean enough to God that He should come see about us. Remember the story of Hagar, Sarah’s handmaiden who obeys her mistress and bears a son for Abraham. Her suggestion that this one deed gave her relevance gives us some insight into her sense of self worth. Thus, when she ran away from her mistress after being mistreated, her greatest fear was confirmed, “I don’t matter.” Perhaps we can identify with Hagar’s state of mind. Charles Spurgeon provides this insight, “I think I see clearly that she was amazed that God should care for her”. She was amazed that God took time to visit with her and speak to someone who felt they didn’t matter. Why would He stop by to see about someone who had not acknowledged Him as God and didn’t serve Him? Yet she stated, "You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen[c] the One who sees me.” “Haven’t we thought at one time, ‘Why me, my Lord? Why me?’" Yet, He called our name, when we were yet in sin, and said, come! When we were in great pain and despair, He took time to come see about us. Sit still in holy wonder, and see the power of God and adore and bless His Holy name.” .We matter! GiGi❤️
