I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed the pillar, and where you vowed a vow to me: now arise, get you out from this land. (Genesis 31:13)
There are times when the Lord has to get our attention and remind us of our first love. He may lead us back to our roots, our beginnings, that period of our lives where we walked so closely with him. Remember how we prayed more, spent more time studying the Word of God, and were so eager to treat others the way we wanted to be treated. After a while, our own interests began to seep in as they had for Jacob. Jacob was building his own wealth, his possessions and children had increased, and he began to seek out his own interests. Our Lord reminded him of Bethel, the altar where he made his vows, “Arise and get you out of this land.” A.J. Fuller wrote, “The object of the vow was, that Jehovah should be his God: and whenever he should return, that that stone should be God's house. And now that the Lord commands him to return, He reminds him of his vow. He must not go to Canaan with a view to promote his own temporal interest, but to introduce the knowledge and worship of the true God. This was the great end which Jehovah had in view in all that He did for Abraham's posterity, and they must never lose sight of it.” If we have gotten off track let us be encouraged to remember our first works, our vows and return to God’s work.
