18 But someone will say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. - James 2: 18 The last time, we set forth a working definition of faith that works. We suggested that: "Faith that works is an unwavering trust or assurance put into action which relies on and expects God to work." In an effort to unpack this definition, we first focused on the word trust. Now, as we continue to peel away the power of this sentence, let us put our finger on the adjective which precedes the word trust. That is the word "unwavering." Thus, a second aspect of faith that works is the fact that it is not only trust, but is an unwavering trust. It is not here today and gone tomorrow. It is not wishy washy, sometimey or helter skelter. This unwavering trust is rock solid. It is rooted. It is grounded. It is steadfast. It is unmovable. It is unshakable. It is unflappable. For, after all, trust that wavers is no longer trust. Wavering trust is called doubt! Our faith cannot work when it is mixed with double mindedness. Our faith will not work when it buys into negativity. Our faith is unable to work when it is focused on fear. Our faith refuses to work when it has been sold out to uncertainty. It only works when we are as unwavering in our faith as God is unwavering in His love, power and grace. Unwavering trust sings: My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus' blood and righteousness. I dare not trust the sweetest frame, But wholly trust in Jesus' Name. On Christ the solid Rock I stand, All other ground is sinking sand; All other ground is sinking sand. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord. - 1 Corinthians 15: 58 Pastor Benjamin Morris
