Twice in a day, I heard from two different sources that, “Courage overcomes fear.” Courage means to have the strength to persevere or overcome in the midst of pain, danger, or difficulty. The scripture I’ve always used when I faced fear is, “perfect love casts out fear.” (1 John 4:18) So, when I heard these statements yesterday, I wondered, “Now how does perfect love give me courage?” It is our relationship with God that is the foundation of our faith. Have you ever been in a relationship with someone who said that they didn’t believe you? Have you ever told someone you care deeply for, “I don’t trust you?” When we operate in fear that is exactly what we are communicating to our God, who loved us first. Spurgeon wrote: “Even those who have faith in God may occasionally be weak enough to fear and be dismayed about common circumstances to which they ought to be indifferent, or over which they ought by faith to exult. Desponding people can find reason for fear where no fear is. A certain class of persons are greatly gifted with the mournful faculty of inventing troubles. If the Lord has not sent them any trial, they make one for themselves. They have a little trouble factory in their houses, and they sit down and use their imaginations to meditate terror.” Even the strongest people will experience fear. David, although he faced Goliath, experienced fear at some point. The question is do we love our God enough to believe that we will persevere, that we will overcome whatever it is that we fear if we just trust Him? He loves us unconditionally and has our backs. He just wants us to talk to Him about it and He will sit us under a juniper tree just like He did Elijah. That's what perfect love looks like. “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10) Now let us be courageous.
