“Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.” (1 Corinthians 10:12) Being overly confident in our own ability can give us a false sense of security. “An excessive faith in ourselves and our judgment means that we too often ignore our vulnerability to bias and error.” Overconfidence has been blamed for the “sinking of the Titanic, the nuclear accident at Chernobyl, the loss of Space Shuttles Challenger and Columbia, the subprime mortgage crisis of 2008 and the great recession that followed it,” “But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him.” (Jeremiah 17:7) Placing our confidence in God is our choosing to lean not on our own understanding but in all of our ways acknowledge him and trust him to direct and guide us. This will require us to pray and wait until we hear from him. Some of our largest errors have been due to our inability or unwillingness to do just that. “Overconfidence is a moth which frets the garments of virtue. Those flies, those pretty flies of self-praise, must be killed, for if they get into your pot of ointment they will spoil it all. Forget the past; thank God who has made you pray so well; thank God who has made you kind, gentle, or humble; thank God who has made you give liberally; but forget it all and go forward, since there is yet very much land to be possessed!” (Charles Spurgeon) Dear Lord, increase our sense of awareness, because you alone are God. Stir us to acknowledge you first so that we will place our confidence solely in you. GiGi❤️
