Anchor for the soul

“We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain.” (Hebrews 6:19)

Some historians believe that the anchor was invented by the Greeks. Anchors were needed when making long sea journeys and the ship would be too far out at sea and therefore, too far away from land to be docked. It is recorded that the Greeks used “baskets of stones, large sacks filled with sand, and wooden logs filled with lead. They tied these to ropes and threw them over the side to steady the vessel.

Similarly, we find that same concept to be true as we place our hope in God.  He offers us the same type of steadiness as we remain anchored in him.

We all know how it feels to be in the midst of a crisis. Sudden change can present great uncertainty. Sometimes it feels as if the rug has been pulled right out from under us; we are free falling. Perhaps the person that was a lifelong friend or the one we have been in love with, feels like a complete stranger standing in front of us during a critical moment. Something has changed. Perhaps, we just learned that the place we called home will no longer be a place of refuge, income is no longer a source of security, or where we were once independent, we found ourselves dependent on others.

Despite our circumstances, what we have learned is that God is a constant, steadfast, unchanging presence in our lives. As one writer notes, “Unlike the feelings-based, doubt-infused definition of hope common in our world, the Christian’s hope is a ‘strong and trustworthy anchor.‘” Who would we be without our anchor? Where would we be had he not reminded us that he is a God that is with us?

“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8)
