“Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.” (Titus 2:14) There is a great difference between the believer and unbeliever. The believer must conduct her or himself in a “manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.” Therefore, we cannot just treat people in any kind of way, nor should we choose to live in a way that no one can even see our salvation. It is our witness and our glory. When our eyes are on God, we are compelled to treat others the way we want to be treated. When our mind is on Christ we will refrain from dishonesty and lying. When we have committed our lives to God, we will resist “trickery, overreaching, misrepresentation, and deceit.” There is no peace in taking something that does not rightfully belong to us. The child of God does not have to cheat anyone to get ahead. We might be talked about and ridiculed with the implication that we are too good, too nice, too holy, too righteous, and thus we will be taken advantage of and walked on. But this is just a trick of the enemy. With boldness, we live holy, and with boldness we never become weary in doing well, for we will reap a great and mighty reward if we stay on course. As we seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, we will consider him in our decision-making. We will consider him in how we treat others. “God’s presence will be our joy, God’s strength will be our confidence, God’s providence will be our inheritance, God’s glory will be the chief end of our being, God’s law the guide of our conversation.” We have been redeemed.
